Planting a Kitchen Garden

We certainly hope that the fair weather is here to stay and we'll be able to get on with our gardening projects soon. I have been warned however that one mustn't plant anything in New England until well after the last frost, which could mean after Memorial Day. With that deadline in mind, our gardening expert, Kem Vassallo, from the Amherst Garden Club, will be visiting the library on Tuesday, May 29 at 7 pm to teach us how to plant a kitchen garden. She will introduce us to the plants that thrive in the New England environment and provide fresh herbs for tasty recipes. She will advise us on the best methods for planting in containers, too. Recipe ideas will be shared. To register for this free program, just call the library at 673-2408 or sign up on the Library Calendar.

The library has a wealth of materials on gardening as well as information on visiting local public gardens. One of my favorite gardens is The Fells located in Newbury on the shores of Lake Sunapee. Another wonderful place to visit is Tower Hill Botanic Gardens located in Worcester, Massachusetts. In fact, Moms are admitted free on Mother's Day! Be sure to make plans to visit soon, but stop by the library first to plan your trip.
